A Treasure at Sea for Dragon and Me is a bouncy, rhyming story that follows a young girl’s beach day with her father and friend the Dragon. Dragon doesn’t know all the important rules and safety precautions that come with swimming. He runs into the ocean right away before he gets and adult’s permission. He goes to dive in a shallow area. These are things all young children are tempted to do when beginning to swim. The main character explains the proper water rules throughout the book, teaching Dragon more and more about water safety as the book progresses.
“Dragon! Don’t jump! It’s shallow!” I said,
“Don’t dive off this dock or you might hurt your head!”
The protagonist is quick to correct Dragon, as shown in the beautiful pencil drawings, giving children a visual and realistic account of events. An interactive checklist at the end provides children with the opportunity to apply their learning’s from the book.

Parents and swimming instructors who are looking to teach children the importance of water safety will find this book to be an extremely useful tool. A light hearted book with an important life lesson, A Treasure at Sea for Dragon and Me is certain to please children along with comforting parents, knowing their children are learning life saving skills. All this is accomplished without overwhelming children with many rules and regulations. It is a highly recommended read for children who are beginning to learn to swim.
