Is Sugar Really Evil?
Today, society demonizes sugar -even natural sugar- for its negative effects on the human body. But natural sugar may have more pros than cons.
The positive aspects of natural sugars are often overlooked by the general public in favor of the negative ones. Marion Nestle, a biologist at NY university, says that “The brain requires sugar—glucose—as a source of energy. It can’t function without glucose.” Without glucose- a simple monosaccharide found within sugar- the human brain cannot function properly or at all in some cases, and a healthy intake of natural sugar can boost your brain’s energy and proficiency significantly.
That’s not the only way natural sugars can benefit the brain, though. Dr. Best says in an article that “In a number of studies we’ve shown that the plant saccharides are related to better memory performance and mood. In particular, after 12 weeks participants showed increased learning and recall of information - and better mood.”
Dr Best has shown that a regular intake of natural sugar not only increases your cognitive capabilities, but also improves your mood and outlook on life, and your general feeling of happiness. And with so many depressed americans today, this can truly help as an alternative to expensive and sometimes dangerous antidepressants.
A harvard study called “What are the real risks of antidepressants concluded that “In recent years, the side effects of these drugs, from sexual dysfunction to suicidal behavior, have received more attention.” Scientists find more and more risk factors of antidepressants every day. Clearly, a healthy consumption of natural sugars would be able to mimic at least some of the traits of a more risky, expensive drug that can be abused.
Fruits high in natural sugars tend to be higher in antioxidants. According to Carly Schuna of San francisco gate magazine, “the nutrients in fruit can help reduce the risks of heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and other diseases.” According to Schuna these vitamins can be found in large quantities in naturally sugary fruits like cherries, bananas, and grapes. And a daily intake of such fruits can dramatically decrease risk for these diseases. This is an extremely vital factor in the defeat of the United States poor health, once we see americans consuming this food in bulk, we will also likely see them turn down unhealthy added sugar treats in favor of sugary fruits, and we will likely see an improvement in national health.
Sugar can give you an energy boost when you need it. Unfortunately, according to Doctor Mark Hyman, “eating sugar and refined carbs cause diabesity.” According to Doctor Hyman, sugar as an additive can cause obesity and diabetes simultaneously. However, since natural sugar is not processed like table sugars and is not pure sucrose, it doesn’t lead to an unhealthy cholesterol build-up in the arteries. Therefore it can give you a boost of much needed energy without taxing your heart health. Most food that is low in fat (2% milk) uses unhealthy processed sugar as a taste substitute for the missing fat. However, people can easily avoid added sugar foods and beverages like that by eating naturally sugary fruits to satisfy their sweet tooth. Through this theory, naturally sugary fruits could put an end to the obesity epidemic by making sugary snacks just as expensive as fruits if the fruits are produced in bulk at cheap prices, unfortunately, that just isn’t the case. According to Michael De Groote of the Desert News, “"Fresh fruits and vegetable prices are expected to rise up to 3 percent this year with fruit prices rising as much as 3.5 percent” According to this statement, the cost of fresh fruits and veggies will soon skyrocket, giving low income families no fruit alternative to their usual junk food. This is a huge issue because fruits are already expensive for most families, but now they will become almost unobtainable as a result of the price increase. Although the scenario may seem grim for this delicious alternative, there may still be some hope to make fruits widely available. According to the EWG farm subsidies, in 2012 the government funded the corn industry with nearly $2,702,462,268. Even a small portion of that money spent on GMO corn could easily be redirected to encourage farmers to grow organic produce and sell it at cheap prices like corn. Once organic fruit becomes cheap and affordable for all families, then we will likely see a dip in the US obesity epidemic.
Natural sugars is the perfect alternative to other ingredients that make up for the majority of the world’s epidemic health conditions. Natural sugars should never be written off when searching for healthy alternatives.
