Amazing Grace
The sails had been folded and brought down while the anchor was lowered into the eerie dark water. The moon and stars were now in place and the cold chill of a night’s sky had all the crew that was on board in layers of warmer clothing. The Amazing Grace rocked back and forth as the ocean’s waves rolled underneath, causing a creek from the lower cabin. This was my first night at sea. Determined to sleep on deck I was huddled next to a friend and the foghorn, at least that is what it seemed to be as the continuous din spoke into my ear all night. Clouds passed in clusters with rain, dampening everything outside and most of the crews desire to fight through the night up top. By 2’oclock there was no progress I had made towards falling asleep. The remaining crew and I had given up and decided to accept that we would receive little sleep that night so we made the best of our adventure with story telling, eating candy and lots of excessive laughter that came as a side affect of droopy eyes. I remember waking up and unaware of how I fell asleep but flattered I had made it through the night.
