The Desire for the Dreaded Dollar
I have seen one too many people pursue a career path that will not satisfy them emotionally, but rather financially. Hasn’t anyone ever heard of the phrase “money can’t buy you happiness?” In fact, where I’m originally from, I always came into contact with a lot of rich people, and let me tell you, while they were practically in head to toe designer jingling the keys to their brand new shiny red Mustang, they were far from happy. In fact, at least from what I’ve observed, most of the richest people have the most problems. So that’s why it bothers me so much that I see people who don’t want to be an accountant become an accountant, or that person who really doesn’t feel like being in a suit and tie reluctantly put on that attire just to please…. who? Their family? Their wallet? Certainly not themselves. But that’s just the thing! Why would you want to be confined to a life of passionless, mindless work where you never feel fulfilled. But hey, remember, you got a decent paycheck at the end of the day.
Nobody wants to struggle, and I understand that. I don’t want to struggle either. But I also don’t want to be stuck behind a cubicle in a gray office drinking stale coffee and staring out the window into blithering nothingness just waiting for the day I walk out into the street and that taxi finally runs me over. Bleak right? Well that’s a life without passion I guess.
But wouldn’t you rather wake up every single day and say, “I love my job! I can’t wait to go to work today!” I know I would. Who wouldn’t really?
So that’s why I encourage everyone to go after what they love, even if it seems risky. Because honestly, I know I would rather have a life of happiness and passion than a life of mind numbing boring work with no reward other than a paycheck. You should feel fulfilled by what you do, not empty.
