Fast Fashion Constructs a Frightful Future
Climate change affects many species including ourselves leading to endangerment and extinction. It leads to countless drastic weather changes such as drought, storms, heat waves, and rising sea levels, damaging the ecosystem greatly. One of the leading factors contributing to global warming is the fast fashion industry. It fills the T-shirts and pants one wears with cheap plastics resulting in taking hundreds of years to biodegrade. Also, they often exploit workers in less wealthy countries. Although some claim sustainable clothing is too expensive to invest in, it needs to be a larger part of the fashion industry due to the colossal amounts of water waste, tons of CO2 emissions, and overflowing landfills created by common brands.100 billion garments get thrown each year which equates to 92 million tons of just clothing waste. Fast fashion uses thus polluting immense amounts of water with artificial dyes. This cartoon shows how much clothing waste a person can produce.
