DA SOLO
I walk down
these crowded halls
all alone.
They might as well be empty.
I avoid the eyes—
the looks of surprise—
my teachers give.
I hurry to my class
without a word.
I fake a smile,
to those who chance
to look my way.
I act as though
everything’s alright.

Nothing is
alright.
Everything could never be
more of the opposite.
…but when you’re all alone—
and no one cares—
it’s just easiest to fake a smile,
and pretend…
