Saturday
I saw him lying there on Saturday.
The fuzz surrounded him with yellow tape.
Though it wasn't my business to gape,
I saw him lying there on Saturday.
I saw people walking to and fro.
The mall is the only place that I know
Where people shop and laugh as they would go
And ignore all the life that ceased to flow.
They towered over him--
Cars wrapped in metal trim--
Maybe five,
Maybe six
Stories over him...
And suddenly I knew:
His face lacking in hue
Was not because
Of their actions
Or the lights, red and blue...
I saw him lying there on Saturday;
What was his nobody else could take.
But no one would see all the hearts he'd break,
And so I cried for him on Saturday.
And as I cried
I watched
Him fall
Asleep.
