I Am Young
Youth springs bounteous from my toes with every golden footstep
My age is reflected in little stick arms, swaying as I jog
The days of my life linger in the bug-spray scented locks flowing freely in the wind
The relentless wind that blows my hood back and reddens the tips of my ears with a single whisper
For I am young
My barefoot feet bask in the warm mud seeping over them
My arm, adorned with homemade hemp bracelets and beads of all sorts, reaches eagerly for the light pole of a finish line in a rewardless footrace
I break into a cold sweat in pursuit of no prize
For I am young
I am young
For not one minute shall I take for granted the gifts my youth brings
They’ll be stolen all too quickly from my childish self tomorrow
Years and years of adulthood can’t come too late
For today, I am young
