the girl with the salt water smile
the book of cream-colored pages filled with
sunsets, seagulls, and waves lies on the beach
as the artist waits for the tide, toes curled
in the wet sand—here comes the rush of cold
a salt water smile, sand crabs scuttle
freely: reach down and try to pick them up
now chase the waves, chase the wind, run along
the water’s edge, leaving many footprints
white dress and dark hair flapping in the breeze
against blue backdrop and glittering land
see the dolphins close by jumping in and
out of the ragged edges of the sea
