Generically Hispanic
Tendrils of brown, glossy hair
Plain, brown eyes, down-to-Earth
Nothing too special
Except that I was given birth.
Salsa, Merengue, and a staple crop
Banana and cocoa in a coffee pot
Lively and festive until we reach the top
A minority always heard.
"This will certify that the above work is completely original" Ariel Cerelia Valdes
Generically Hispanic, this defines me
Of origins in the Amazon, with the canopy tree
Costa Rican true to the roots and the blossom
Of European cultures too.
But in the land of red, white, and blue
Where the motto is not always true
A surge of people are facing immigration
Many Hispanics facing alienation.
Now it might not seem too special
When you see me a mere seventeen
But take a look closer
I am Hispanic
One true
To the roots in the dream.
Dreams are not only shared by me
But all races down to the T
Who hope of equality and a better life
That is our dream, that is our strife.
