Waiting for a Chance
Waiting for a chance,
waiting to see the ball kiss the metal of my bat,
To hear the thump of the ball when it plummets to the earth,
To drive my dirty cleats into the dirt, driven by the thought of defeat.
Waiting to be a cheetah running for a gazelle at top speed,
To feel the wind in my face as I round the dirty rubber plate, second base,
To hear the window breaking speed of the ball zip by your brain.
To see the dust shoot off the third baseman's glove when the ball collides with the giant net of leather,
Then to get the adrenaline to turn back,
only to find the second baseman has it. To make you turn back again,
Then to finally slide into third and be safe,
To just wait there ready to pounce like a lion.
To get the hope when you start and the winning run feeling when you make it.
But I am stuck here,
in these concrete walls.
Just waiting.
Waiting for a chance.
