Maple Syrup Eyes
The Grade C maple syrup in the white
and creaky cabinet's my favorite.
I held the bottle to the light one time.
It glowed just like your eyes. The light, well, danced
into the glass and made the syrup warm
and beautifully amber, colored like
your perfect eyes. Your eyes are richer, though,
and more alive than any syrup from
my cabinets. I wonder how they're mine,
these amber rings that glow in light? That means
they must be sweeter than the syrup, too.
I ask another time and you just say,
"They are because they love you, dear. Okay?"
