Gently I Stare off into the Darkness
Gently I stare off into the darkness
My eyes strain because there is nothing to see
No light no heat
Only the damp terrain underfoot
But I travel on
Further and further
A feeling of safety but only in my mind
If I can only see just one spec
I will make it out alive
I panic
What if I am going deeper
I feel my way along the wall
With arm and fingers extended
Hunger and thirst
A ray
An exclamation of excitement
I will live on
No more fear
It will soon be over
Twenty four hours trapped
But escaped I have
The stomach of the Earth
