All of us learn to write in second grade. Most of us go on to greater things

Curious eyes, a tiny face
Stare back from my reflection
No blemishes, not a trace
Just simple fairy perfection.
Behind me, Peter stands with joy
All my life, it’s the same boy
He holds my heart; to him a toy
Yet I’m in pain from his rejection.

Then evil comes, and it’s a hag
Who stands tall with golden heart
When Peter looks, I want to gag
Please keep him safe from her art.
But he’s a child, with love for her
Taking my dust, though I don’t concur
Towards the window, and in a blur
They shoot away, like rapid darts.

In our place she gets a home
While I am thrust to the side
Peter and I, now never alone
She gets his heart, though I tried.
Now he see’s me as a pet
But while I wait I weave a net
One that will catch her, want to bet?
Payback for all the times I cried.

But then she’s caught and Peter screams
Says it’s my fault, this whole big mess
She could have died – my favorite dream
For her exit is my success.
Yet Peter cares, so I refrain
For he’s the one that keeps me sane
What I’d do for him again
I’d give my life, suffer no less.

Then she’s gone, though he swore
To pay her visit every spring
Peter – now mine once more
Though second best is a true sting.
I once was his, and he was mine
But then my love did he decline
To him I lied – I am not fine
A brokenheart – to him I cling.
