Belief, Unexpressed: Prompted by Langston Hughes
What happens to belief, unexpressed?
Does it burn slowly
like dying embers without oxygen
and smother itself?
Or shudder and crack
like a hovel in the face of a gale?
Or does it build
like the gas in a balloon,
stretching its restraints
until
it bursts the heart in which it is hidden?
Or is it unleashed
like mist dissipating,
until it is inhaled
as concentrated vapors
by those who would wreak its havoc
upon the world
destroying!
Tearing down skyscrapers
and rattling the foundations of humanity
with all its pent-up zeal?
