City Lights
Was there ever a shot as beautiful,
Ever a sensation so high,
As staring into the dark
Of city lights in late July?
Can there be a sight equally grand,
Or a moment this inopportune,
To look expecting nothing
But see a region in full bloom?
And what is more ephemeral
Than the streetcar outracing time?
Drifting on outskirts of a city
The sidewalk’s edge undefined
When darkness embraces streetlights wild,
Sharpening every sense and fear,
A single beam flickers and dies
But who will know it was ever there?
