Ghosts of the Prairie
A cloud of dust, a shimmer of heat
The hot sun beats down upon cactus and ridge
And high in the sky blue and eagle meet.
But wait!
They’re coming
Hoofbeats
Heartbeats
Moving with the soil
With the earth
With the Dawn
With the Dusk
With the chill prairie Nights
Their streaming out manes
Like banners against azure
The pounding of their hooves
Like a fast-flowing river
The fire in their eyes
Of starlight
Of spirit
Of the prairie
And then they’re gone
Just like that
And now there’s only the eagle
And the blue.
