(A modern Horatian ode)

Dark chocolate cheesecake freshly born
From out thy hands able and worn
And in a trice we slice, you mourn
To honour cheesecake’s death we’ve sworn

Well dearest, little may you know
That New Years Eve, cold with no snow
A new age has began to grow
Another year, another foe

Nevertheless I have my friends
To lean on me and me on them
We celebrated with no end
Them with my heart I will defend

O dearest one tonight we sang
To heart’s content our voices rang
And merged as one, with hand in hand
New love and peace throughout the land

Then suddenly I felt a push
It’s just my friends, be quiet, shush
I made a wish, and with no rush
Blew you away with just one hush

Dark chocolate I now understand
Thy bitterness makes sugar bland
Life’s bittersweet, but here we stand
Our tarts and sweetness both expand

O cheesecake thou died not in vain
All grace to you, who kept us sane
Perhaps we’ll fold a thousand cranes
Fly far away, as new moon wanes.

To a dead dark chocolate cheesecake: Thank you.
