It’s when you think it will last forever
Till the day you get the Dear John letter

And so the story goes…

One walked into her life
And filled her head with doubt
Made her second guess herself
And so she pushed the other out

All smooth and sly and sweet
A player in his prime
Gave her his tried-and-true routine
Right words, right moves, right time

He swept her off her feet
This traitor of a knight
What could the other do
But stand there, ready to fight

For his fierce love had been undermined
By a coward with clever disguise
And she failed to see past his charming persuasion
There was no truth behind his eyes

The other asked what he could do to fix it
But she shook her head and turned away
And as she did she buried their love
Thinking maybe she’d come back for it another day

And this man, so brave and gentle
Was torn apart at the seams
As he watched her walk away
Leaving behind his shattered dreams

They say that if you love someone
You’ll let them go and set them free
I promised I’d love her forever, he thought
Maybe someday she’ll come back to me

The months wore on and nothing changed
So in an act of self-defense
This man armored himself against all hurt
Because nothing else made sense

He hated what had happened to her
How she’d forgotten their destiny
And all he had left to hold onto
Was a box of broken memories

The thought of having lost her
Drove him crazy every day
As he wondered if there was something he could’ve done
That would have made her stay

Eventually the one got bored
And moved on to a new thrill
And she remembered the other’s words…
"I love you, always have and always will"

So there she stood at his door
Wondering what he’d say
But he looked at her with the saddest eyes
Shook his head and turned away

"The day you walked away from me
Was the day my heart shut its door
And though I’ll always love you
My heart doesn’t know how to anymore"

So she got in her car and drove away
Too stunned to even speak
Because she knew it was really over
And the thought made her feel weak

But there was one thing she’d never know
The other kept secretly hidden
That all he really wanted
Was to have her back again

And as he shut the door
This brave strong man broke apart
As lonely anguished tears
Poured from his little boy heart

And so the story ends…

Because nothing lasts forever
When you’re looking for something better

"It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done, and it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever gone." I really enjoyed your poem! Great job, you really have a gift with poetry! :))))
