Vacant
I'd been chipping at the paint coating this solemn prison,
Every color underneath a timeline, history never risen.
I stared out the icy window, left my handprint on the glass,
the way that you marked my spirit, though it would never last.
I guess you thought I wouldn’t find you hiding under my bed,
You thought I wouldn’t feel you pouring yourself into my head.
You took my heart and weaved a chain, placed it around your neck,
You tucked me into lonely sheets, planted lips upon this wreck.
But I just couldn’t sleep my dear, I’d been frightened far too long.
I was sick of living in silence, while my mind played a thunderous song.
I shut the blinds and curtains to shield you from the light,
I held your heart inside my hand, and hoped you’d stay with me all night.
I'd dreamt long nights with you, letting tears stain sheets,
Though you'd long been gone, I couldn’t bear to watch you leave.
I locked the doors and nailed the windows shut, I didn't let you hide,
I drove you against the mirror, splintering stars into the sky.
You came crashing down, fell onto shattered knees,
I saw a dimming in your eye, the last hint of any gleam.
I listened for the wind to sing me back to sleep,
a reverberating sound, summoning my sanity.
