The Days of Old
Another story, another grave
A life, a sacrifice
To pave the way
But the young ones don’t know
For they’ve never been told
The tales of heroes
From the days of old
One nameless soldier
His story forgotten
For when it was all over
He went quietly back home again
With nary a complaint
Not a soul he told
There was no room for hate
In the days of old
A young marine
A young man so brave
Sailed out to sea
Unsuspecting of his watery grave
His comrades, they mourned
For there was nothing they could do
But continue on, to yonder shore
And pay his memory one last due
Not for medals or valor
Did they strive
They fought for the honor
Of their brothers who died
They fought off their fears
Just like the cold
There was no time for tears
In the days of old
A young pilot, fresh out of training
Had no idea the lives he'd be saving
With his cap on straight and his uniform looking sharp
He bid farewell, to the woman with his heart
With a tear in her eye, and a warm embrace
She whispered, "I promised you forever, and that's how long I'll wait."
He kissed her head
And waved goodbye
He vowed they would someday be wed
Then he took to the skies
A promise left broken,
He never returned
And though it hurt to hold on
She stayed true to hers
This man had stood for what's right
For he had never been told
To back down from a fight
In the days of old
A young woman
Who had everything to lose
Her family, her children
So she had to choose
They were all hungry
And it would only get worse
She needed to make some money
So she became an army nurse
She'd provide for her children,
Whatever the cost
If she could protect her family
Not all hope was lost
What actions were needed
No matter how bold
Fears gone unheeded
In the days of old
As the war carried on
More sacrifices were made
As many young heroes
worked to pave the way
One young soldier
His story never forgotten
The young pilot,
Whose life was taken
The brave marine
And his comrades who carried on
The courageous mother
Who had to be strong
For all the stories untold
Let our hearts know
And remember all the heroes
From the days of old.
