A Portrait of Two Roses
Baby balmy blue-eyes,
Barely budding rose,
Beginning to discover
Her fingers and her toes.
Learning how to smile,
Practicing her laugh -
She's learned to cry already,
And to shred silence in half.
Her eyes open to color,
Her ears open to noise -
Her heart open to loving
And her soul open to joys.
Oh, precious baby blue-eyes
Waking to life's dawn-bird call,
May you ever be so soft and sweet,
So simple and so small.
Girlish ocean-blue eyes,
Barely blooming rose,
Beginning to discover
What is gold in what she knows.
Still learning how to smile,
To keep alive her laugh -
When she rather would be crying,
To keep her salt tears back.
Her eyes seeing new color,
Her ears hearing new noise -
Her heart striving to love,
Her soul to clasp true joys.
Oh, precious baby blue-eyes,
As I wake to life's war-call,
Teach me to be sweet as thee,
As simple and as small.

I got the idea for this poem while watching my baby sister play, so innocent and sweet and simple. The first stanza describes her, and the second stanza describes me. Babies might not be able to do complex algebraic equations, excel at sports, or write poetry, but they can teach us an awful lot about life.
