Ode to a Moth
It seems inconceivable I know,
But sometimes I wish I could be you,
Moth,
And when the sky fills with stars,
Scattered across the dark like the sugar I spilled,
Yesterday when I needed something to dull the bitterness,
Of the coffee I poured myself steaming from the pot'
And when the sky is dotted with so many stars,
It seems large enough to hold my most secret night-wishes,
So I'll hold my breath,
Count to three,
Click my sneakers like they were Dorothy's red shoes,
And whisper to the heavens'
I wish to be a moth.
To be like you would be a blessing,
To fade away from view,
And become nothing more then a mere,
Moth.
Nobody remembers a moth,
When they think of insects to do an art project on,
Nobody thinks of moths,
When they think of pretty summer things,
Or insects that flutter in the sky,
How can anybody remember a moth?
When butterflies dance on the edges of your dreams,
Or when bumblebees buzz from flower to flower,
Sweet as the honey they make in their hive.
If I were a moth,
Nobody would care,
If I was being quiet or loud,
Or if I was in a good mood or bad,
I could be whoever I wanted to be,
Without people judging the colors of my wings,
Because they would be so blissfully blank'
And white is a wonderful color.
If I were you,
Moth,
I could flutter,
Carried about by the swift current of the wind,
Leaving my troubles behind,
As I spiraled towards the sky,
Leaving behind,
All of the hatred and the confusion,
The truths,
And the lies,
And if I were a moth things would be so'
s i m p l e.
And life would not be a complicated mass of,
Thoughts jumbled together,
My insecurities knotted around my throat like a noose.
It would all be,
s i m p l e.
If I could be a insect,
Dear moth,
I would be you.
