Footprints in the Sand
I wake up lying on an unknown beach
And find a set of footprints in the sand
That lead off into the distance.
Without a thought I chase after them,
Letting them lead me where they will.
I race pass trees and cliffs
And feel a cool wind whip my face
As I round the bends an follow a new course
Under a sheet of pail moonlight.
I begin to break free as I leap from the sand.
But I find myself sitting, only sitting
In the blistering, burning sand.
I chase the footprints in the sand,
Watch the fade into the sea.
I follow them into the waves,
And feel the strong water lap around me.
Occasionally a wave tosses me into the air
Like my father lifting me as a young child.
I can taste the salt on my lips.
I can smell the clean ocean of life.
I can hear the myriad of its music.
I twirl and whirl in a whole new world,
Creating my own dance in the moonlight.
But I find myself sitting, only sitting
In the blistering, burning sand,
Chocking on the heat of the salt air
While chained to an unmovable boulder
By rusty scorching bounds.
The moon slowly slips under me
And a golden orb takes its place.
I bask in golden waves as I swim to the sun.
Breaking free of the sparkling yet heavy water
I begin to walk on air.
I float in the clouds and mingle with the birds.
I feel my soul lift and dip
As I sever any link that binds me.
I slip away from the earth and fly around the stars,
And imagine the places I have yet to see.
All of it mine, and all of it the place
Where I at last belong.
But I find myself sitting, only sitting
In the blistering, burning sand,
Chocking on the heat of the salt air
While chained to an unmovable boulder
By rusty scorching bounds.
Fortunately for me,
Rusted chains shatter easily'
And I leave my own trail of footprints in the sand.
