What Broke My Heart
What broke my heart was not
A simple word or thought.
It was not a single event
Nor something I could prevent.
What broke my heart was love,
Or rather, the lack thereof.
It was thinking, “He won’t return.”
It is that for which I yearn.
What broke my heart was change.
The sudden shift was strange
And hard to cope with at times.
I didn’t think I’d be “fine.”
What broke my heart was pain
That would fall down like rain,
Pouring over her fragile heart.
She tried not to fall apart.
What broke my heart was fear
That the person she held dear
Would destroy our hopes and dreams
And ignore our pleading screams.
What broke my heart was truth
That I learned in my youth
About the people I adore.
I didn’t want truth anymore.

This poem refers to divorce. More specifically that of my parents. It is something that is difficult to cope with and something that I will never get over. My hope is that people will at least have an idea of the pain that is caused by divorce. I hope that my poem sheds light on the distressing reality of divorce.
