Sticks and stones may break my bones
but words can also hurt me.
Sticks and stones break only skin,
while words are ghosts that haunt me.

Curses, names, and threats were shouted
time and time again,
leaving with me thoughts of hate
and pushing me near my end.

Pain from words has left its scar
on mind and heart that's tender.
Cuts and bruises now have healed, it's words that I remember.

Memories of years spent fighting tears
grab hold and tear my mind.
Inside I hold my desires close,
my happiness you will find.

Anyone that's been bullied knows that the old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but words may never hurt me" is a blatant lie. Words stick to you; they can hold you down.

Wow, this is amazing. I really liked it. I connected with it from a personal note, while realizing the battles you must have been through. It really had me going, and I enjoyed reading it. So well written with a nice flow. Beautiful!

The poem was very easy to follow. I liked the way you use an old phrase to start the beat and keep it simple yet deep. This poem would be very sad if you hadn't added that last stanza, and I think that was a good way to show hope.

I sometimes get bored reading poetry because I can't determine a proper flow. However, after reading the first stanza, I knew I was going to enjoy this one. I especially like the line "while words are ghosts that haunt me". I also like how you ended the poem with "Inside I hold my desires close, my happiness you will find", showing that as detrimental as the abuse has been, your "character" is reslilient and holds true to their happiness.
