Vincent Van Gogh
People say,
Vincent Van Gogh,
Ate yellow pain to get
Happiness inside of him.
But that isn't quite true.
He swallowed it
To kill himself.
Did you know that?
But yellow is maybe a happy colour.
A sunflower colour.
But maybe it's a sad colour.
A colour of vomit, fast and surreal.
But red is maybe a happy colour.
A loving colour.
But maybe it's a sad colour.
A colour of blood, spilt on white tile.
But blue is maybe a happy colour.
A peaceful colour.
But maybe it's a sad colour.
A colour of a hopeless and breathless face.
But green is maybe a happy colour.
A lucky colour.
But maybe it's a sad colour.
A colour of moss, growing on a coffin.

This piece is about depression. There's a lot romanticisation and stigma around this illness, like people saying Van Gogh eating paint has something to do with getting happy. That's not true. Wanting to kill yourslef is vicseral and uncomfortable, not something poetic. The colours symbolise the paint, here, and the paint tells a story.
