the “i love you more” game
you pushed me playfully as we laughed uncontrollably,
we fell to the floor and laughed even harder,
laughing until we couldn't laugh anymore.
you looked at me and said ever so softly,
"i love you,"
my heart glowing as the words were said,
i replied with,
"i love you more."
but as we stand here months later,
looking into your deep blue eyes,
i knew you were gone.
i began to feel terrified,
to never feel safe again.
because the one place i have ever felt truly safe,
was your arms.
i saw you slipping away right in front of me,
i could feel my heart crushing inside of my chest.
once again,
your deep blue eyes looked back at mine,
as they once did with love,
but now with sympathy.
and that was when i realized,
i had won.
not you,
not your love,
and not your heart.
but i had won the "i love you more" game.
