Say It Like You Mean It
Why do you never say what you mean?
I’m not mad, you say, fury clear on your face
I’m fine, you assure me, as you try to hide tears sliding down your cheeks
I still love you, the empty promise you give me as I’m sent away
I’m just a kid, but I’m expected to understand your cryptic words
Are you disappointed or proud?
Are you happy or mad?
I just want to be loved by you like any other kid
You tell me not to worry, you sometimes say things you don’t mean when you’re angry
All this makes me wonder is if you ever mean anything when you say things
If you don’t mean it when you’re mad at me then do you mean it when you love me?
Why can you never say what you mean?
This was originally a writing assignment inspired by a Billy Collins poem. I ended up falling in love with it as I wrote it. It's about the way I felt when I was younger when I would get in trouble or fight with my parents. I put a little piece of myself in this work to give the reader an understanding of how I felt. I hope you love this piece as much as I do!
