Breathe
Breathe quicker Lucy
Because your throat is swelling up.
The thoughts that you forgot today
The road that you forgot to stray
Is welling up,
Is swelling up.
And though I know you wish to stay
There is no way to tarry now
The ship is ready to take course
Passengers wait along the bow.
And your heart is swelling up.
Breathe quicker Lucy
Because your lungs cannot take so much.
Just pink tissue inside of ribs
Just oxygen inside this nib
And they keep on welling up,
Swelling up.
And though I know there is no way
To bring tomorrow into this day
I count the stars to count the miles
You count the faces along the bow
And your lungs are swelling up.
Breathe quicker Lucy
Because your heart is swelling up.
You say goodbye to all your friends.
You wave farewell to the beginning’s end
As your tears are welling up,
Swelling up.
And though I know you wish to stay
There is no way.

"Writing a novel is not merely going on a shopping expedition across the border to an unreal land: it is hours and years spent in the factories, the streets, the cathedrals of the imagination."
