Footsteps
Your footsteps through the dark
Imitating mine, they walk,
Moving on inside the night;
Reaching, never catching
The outline of my shadow,
Never-ending in this dark.
Head hung high, I spy your face
Staring, hardly bearing
That my one and only wish
Is for your footsteps to return
To the place where I once learned
That endless footsteps do no good
Against the restless, growing world
Beyond your present punishment
And beyond my future judgment
Your footsteps linger a step too far
Inside the boundary of beyond
