Emergence
We surface.
From the sky, from the ashes, from the earth
As our eyes open, our lungs expand
It begins.
As our life lengthens, so do our thoughts
Until they stretch endlessly
through the dusty years.
Horror and happiness waver on a scale
Which will triumph in the end?
Through all this…what do we take from this life?
The expression behind another’s eyes may have the answer.
As the hourglass runs out for us,
we recede, once more
into the sky, the ashes, the earth.
