Opening Day Once Again
As the weather warms
From winter to spring.
Children yearn for the end
Of the school year and
The beginning of summer.
And baseball players yearn,
For the end of Spring Training
And the big inning to start
Out their season.
The first of April means
April Fool’s jokes pulled
Throughout the nation.
…Google and Sports Illustrated
Wreck havoc with their annual hoaxes,
And computer programmers—
Confusing their offices.
Opening Day comes,
And baseball fans rush to the parks.
The businessman calls in sick,
But his coworkers know—
He’s just at the ballpark,
Eating a hot dog
With mustard and relish.
Smelling the smells
He’s waited six months to smell.
And like the players,
He hopes that big inning comes
In the beginning of the game
So he can cheer
And look forward
To a fantastic fall season.
April,
The first month of baseball,
A simple-sample,
Of every team.
And a simple-sample,
Of the weather to come
In the rest of spring.
