like clockwork

if we are clocks
then love is time:
the steady
tick
the background
noise,
the pursued
wasted
abandoned--
the panic.
we live in circles
but love in straight lines,
confined by our own
hands and arms,
by corks and screws.
we think in numbers,
speak in rhyme--
(this is) the panic.
(time)(love) never stops:
moving forward,
we can only break
(ourselves).
