And So I Learned
You taught me how to learn.
You taught me to fight for everything.
You taught me that no one would ever stand in my way.
You watched as I broke my sound barrier.
You watched as I broke my own records.
You watched as I broke my bones so that every day, I could improve,
So that every day, I could feel like a success.
But I was hardly ever a success.
The speed, the fear, the fight,
Even after all these years of your guiding me, it gets to me.
I’d leave feeling that you hadn’t done enough.
But if you never introduced me to Pain,
I could never feel strong in his presence.
If I never met Aversion,
She’d have everything over me.
She has nothing over me.
You taught me how to learn.
You taught me to fight for everything.
You taught me that no one would stand in my way.
And that no one would tread on me when I fell down.
