lullaby
no gray breath of life
from the chimneys
clapboard houses
in crayonbox colors:
brick red, yellow, white,
mint green.
frozen rigging and
skeletal masts
break the skyline
life is stilled, tied up
with cables and
stripped of its sails
an emptying tree
stands sentinel,
still withholding
a few amber leaves
from below little peaks
in houses, the curtains are
drawn tight, shielding
the wharf, washed in white
waves threaten to glaze
over as they lap
timelessly,
cradling hulls in
the wintry caresses
of a lullaby.
