Thanksgiving Minus God
So this is how it works?
Walk in, hug everyone, sit down, and then let the attacks begin.
No one’s in the spirit at all
A question leads to an off comment
Which another relative picks up on, twisting the words sharply
So that now you’re being incriminated
But you’re only 18, you should know by now it’s just a family joke
The way we pick at and make fun of all of our members
One by one, dog eat dog
It got to the point where rage flashed across my face
And my stare became mean, and the room became clouded
Clouded with smells of food and vicious implied insults
Clouded with the wrong kind of mirth, clouded with ill gain
Were we really a family this year, were we?
Or were we really schoolchildren
Laughing at one’s endeavors
Poking fun at one’s shortcomings
Capitalizing on one’s mistakes?
Where was the unity this time?
Thanksgiving minus God.
