“Before that rooster crows
Headed straight to somewhere I don't even want to go
Eggs and bacon in my belly and a Folgers’s coffee buzz”
The smell of the farm slices through
The early morning air as I
Feed and water the animals. I jump
On the tractor and head down
The bumpy gravel road to
The field where it is time to harvest
The crops. I put down the blades on
The combine as the hopper roars,
Separating the corn from the stalks this
Is my life I couldn’t.
