&quot;Fairy tales do not tell children that dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.&quot;<br /> -G.K. Chesterton

A great, rolling
STRIKE
For King Zeus!
Earth bathes in light
Knocking the world
Out of its chair
As the gods party
With hardly a care.
The whispering hint
Of far-fetched dreams
Creeps, curls,
CRRRREAKS
Around bed posts.
You tremble, terror at its peak.
It's Hephaestus's go
With his own handmade ball
Roll – Roll –
BANG!
A giant knocks on the door.
The boogeyman stretches
On the warm carpet
A clown in the corner
Giggles
At the skeleton in the drawer.
Six pins and –
A spare!
Great Hercules the strong
Would not even dare
To challenge this throng
Of cackling, clawing stars
But – CRASH!
The drums start once more,
The clashing of swords
Meet in the foyer.
The house moans and groans
As the ghosts say,
“Hello!”
Stay away
From the window.
You never know what stalks
In this bleak and dreary night.
Now under the covers, could be back
In Mommy's womb,
Sheltered from
This terrible doom.

I had inspiration for this piece during the first thunderstorm of the year the other night. I kept thinking of that old story that thunder was really the angels bowling; I was raised with "Thunder is the gods bowling."
