May I have this dance?
'May I have this dance?'
And she slipped her arm in his,
Saying nothing, and they stepped, stepped, stepped
In a home of arms and eyes
The turn of a wrist meant everything,
So she closed her eyes
And listened as he pulled her closer
Like the wind sweeping strong wings
Into the blue sky:
The strong balance of dance
And she knew exactly
How to rest in his hand
How to hang on his shoulder
How to float like wings on the wind of his turning,
And how to fly on her own;
And she knew exactly
Where and where to go.
I close my eyes,
Sometimes,
And there is nothing more to see than when I open them,
And no hand on my back,
No wind under my hands,
Nothing to speak of but the voice in my throat
And
No
Stars.
When
Will you ask me to dance?
I want to slip my arm in yours
And listen to the turns in your wrists
I want to float
And to fly
Away
