Unending
I wander solemn,
In our worn footsteps.
My heart hangs from your palm
loose but still there.
it is tired
exasperated from change
my smile is taped on
fringing at the edges
like the name tag you smudged
the ashes of our love
smoldering
still sweep across the room
with one breath
to breath or to swim?
that is the question
that haunts the dark corners
of my room at night.
I tempted the unknown
touched its back with my eyes
and came back broken,
wondering and waiting
for the flame.
So far out of reach
I am realizing
the star
that mom says i should aim for
in the abyss
the heavy fog
and dim lit afternoon.
A romance we began
under an alabaster moon.
You say I need not cry out of fear
but the rain pounds on my face
and keeps me up at night.
I let myself love you,
I wanted your child like amazement,
and became used to
the hard edges of your life.
You were the unending sunset
burning in my chilled fall sky.
I still love you
with the perpetual movement
of the stars.
