Up in Smoke
It was the last thing she gave to me
Before she left, fled, disappeared without a trace
Leaving me wondering, thinking, pondering, clueless
Where did she go?
It smelled of her,
Of cigarette smoke and mints swirled together,
From years spent of black lungs and yellowed fingers,
A string of memories clung to it
A lady bug, a ballet dancer, a hardened angel
A promise, a seal, a kiss whispering, I am always here
She left without a trace, a whisper, a goodbye
Fled the Earth and succumbed to the promises of better things
She left me her memories on a golden chain
And I never got to say goodbye
