Progress
Through the ending,
as we fall,
consuming ourselves
when our good progress
is moving backwards
and we cheer when
advances are thwarted
the status quo,
keep it the same
and nothing is wrong
but change will arrive,
welcome or raging
the problems are too towering
for us to see.
the earth will crumble,
the water will drown us,
the air will choke us.
and yet we stumble on,
leaving turmoil behind,
assuming there is none ahead.
A spark, a chance
to save ourselves appears
but we are too busy
wallowing in darkness
to take a lifeline.
so we throw the chance away
as the ghost of perfection
fleeting, gone in a glinting shine
never to improve us
