Two swordsmen
approach till they’re
face-to-face
to duel.
Their objective-
to kill the other foe,
and drink from the fountain of youth.
They don’t realize that there’s enough for both of them.
Their swords ring beautiful music
as they dance through the air,
circling and lunging at each other,
trying to catch one of them off guard.
They block, dodge,
stab, slash,
cut, and hack,
unable to land a blow
that will end this pointless fight.
I watch,
Observantly from the back porch door,
as two hummingbirds
fight for control of the feeder.

The author's comments:
Hummingbirds. Not exactly my favorite birds (falcons are) but they are pretty and fast. I could watch them for hours. But there are things I dislike about them. They're stupid and obnoxious, as well as selfish. The poem explains why.
