Moonlight,
pale and beautiful
opens up the night,
and will witness
murder.
The giant owl,
sitting on his very own specific perch,
detects movement
with his oversized eyes,
hears the rustle of prey moving through leaves,
and launches himself into the dark blue sky.
His wings, pulled back,
dully glisten in the moonlight,
and bring him into a steep dive

like a dive-bomber,
rapidly decreasing the distance between itself and the mouse.
His “puffy” feathers are now pulled back,
into a sleek, silent, torpedo.
He flies close to the ground
and drags his talons through the leaves.
They snag the mouse,
and he clutches it,
ascending,
into the sky,
until he returns to his perch,
satisfied with his accomplishment,
and no longer hungry.
