Children of Divorce
Broken messages snowball into lies.
Father tells me and his daughters
That everything is fine;
But again it’s a lie.
Mother cries for the children she lost
in the arms of another man.
The best part about it
is that it’s a man she can’t stand.
So now we, the children of divorce,
shout for attention with vociferous intentions.
Then we’re put on thin ice
and father isn’t afraid to light a match
beneath our feet.
He won’t extend his arm for us;
I guess that just shows we’re not enough.
I’m learning to cope with the thought of being a mistake;
it almost makes life worth living.
Now looking in the mirror I see the scares he carved in me.
“Not on purpose, I was only playing.”
Seeing her every other weekend isn’t enough.
The riches and regulations make her man feel tough.
I’ll be around when he isn’t, until then good-bye.
It’s not that I don’t love you; you’re just not on my side.
So now we, the children of divorce,
shout for attention with vociferous intention.
We might find what we’re looking for.
Only now he’s already gone off the pills he got the other night,
And we don’t want what he’s giving us;
Because that means the words are lies.
He doesn’t really care, so he says everything is fine,
but again it’s a lie.
