as the snow drifts down
as the snow drifts down
skeletal november trees
thrust bare limbs to grey sky
brittle branches snapping at the wind
inside warm houses
grownups perch
frustrated by the threat of winter
geese honk at cloudy skies
small V’s protesting
the early storm
pets huddle indoors
afraid of the white flakes
coating the summer green lawns
and kids frolic outdoors
boot-clad feet skipping around
claiming this foreign world for themselves
the small
bright eyed
children of winter
