Should have learned long ago
I know I should have realized
Yet somehow,
I'm still naive,
I still believe in the good,
Even when bad over rules.
I should have learned long ago,
That street lights aren't sunshine
And silk flowers aren't scented.
That I'm no Cinderella
And there are no
"happily ever afters"
But I still bend down
And sniff,
Hoping for the sweet sent,
The one that just will not come.
I still look up at lights all around me.
Hoping to feel the sun.
I dance in fields and stand still.
Waiting for a butterfly
to come land on my nose.
I still imagine I get to go to a ball.
And dance all night,
Tightly wrapped in the arms of a man
Of a man that cares.
Even though I don't have till midnight.
