carving beautiful

into this wood

where people have breathed

lived and loved...

to sand that all away

would wash away visceral

emotion and erase

the angels alive in their blood

to sand it all away would

be to never feel the rush of the

wind against those tears

after she didn’t marry him after all

he’s here, after so many years

when I’ve come to sand these

tables where they breathed

laughed

loved

he can’t bare to see

that carved beauty

disappear

forever

I wrote this after washing the picnic tables outside the hamburger and hotdog joint where I work.
