Long Gone
science class told me
the closest star to earth
is 4.7 light years away
so when that star dies
we will continue to see it shine
for 4.7 years
but I didn’t care
about insignificant facts
all I knew was
you were a star
that came down from sky
and into my life.
I tried
so desperately
to untangle your twisted mind
to keep your stomach
full of butterflies
instead of pills
and your mouth
full of kind words
instead of cigarettes
because you were my star
that helped me see
through the darkness
but maybe I should have
paid more attention in class
because I didn’t realize that
no matter how much
I tried to fix you or
how seemingly endless you shined
you were already
long
gone.
